Review

Don’t Look Up is a satire…
An Astronomy professor and one of his PhD students make a catastrophic discovery that threatens to end civilization. This is the story of their desperate attempt to convince anyone and everyone who will listen to take this seriously.

Story: This film is categorized as disaster/fantasy… an apocalyptic black comedy. The people/person who thought this up truly has a vivid imagination. If the point of this story is to capture gravity, desperation and exasperation – mission accomplished.

I don’t know I want to call this a story as much as I want to call this a series of moments in the ridiculous. There is no doubt this story was written to be ridiculous. And it is. Most of the moments in this film are overly dramatized, I believe on purpose. Congratulations on creating a piece of cinema that is good for the 2 hours and 25 minutes it takes to watch it and nothing more.

Performances: NADA. Meryl Streep. Leonardo DiCaprio. Jennifer Lawrence. Cate Blanchette. All academy award winners. Timothee Chalamet. Tyler Perry. Oscar nominated…
What did these people see in this story that made them want to do this? Asking for a friend…

There are rants, there are raves, there are insults and there are complete meltdowns. But I doubt any viewer will be able to find anything by way of thoughtful execution in any scene. This is a satire…

Visual: Gonna give the makers a thumbs up on the look of this film. The ridiculousness is very much represented in the professors tweed jackets and checkered shirts. In the PhD students vibrant hair color and piercings. And in the news anchor team’s perfectly tailored wardrobe and makeup. If making fun of these stations is a goal for this film, again, mission accomplished.

Rating: C- Don’t waste your time seeing this film unless you, like me, review all of the Oscar nominated films for your online magazine. Must compare apples to apples.

Academy: Please review the quality of future nominations more stringently…
