Review

On some level I find the title HORRIBLE BOSSES a bit of an oxymoron. The preponderance of workers tend to suggest most bosses are horrible – the question I keep asking is – Why are people not more aware that they are horrible bosses? Why are there more horrible bosses than good bosses? If you have a good boss, please send me an email…

Story: This review has to be about both installments of Horrible Bosses because its the same story continued. Yes, I know that’s the purpose of a sequel, but, this feels less like a sequel and more like the immediate continuation of the first movie.

The value of these movies is the comedy. It’s raunchy and if you like that, welcome. In fact, there’s one scene that’s so blue, I started choking from laughter. It so exasperated me that I wasn’t sure I could continue watching the second movie. Credit to the writers for inciting reactions from their audience…

Performances: Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day continue the hilarity. Their characters are true to form from beginning to end. There are moments when each of their characters are annoying, but, the feeling dissipates quickly.

Special mention for Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Aniston for maintaining their characters as horrible bosses. And in the second movie, Chris Pine and Christoph Waltz added some flavor to the mix. They are surely the four most dramatic characters in the movies, but, not enough to see any awards…

Visual: There’s nothing special about the way these movies look. Costumes are as expected; No special effects… no sophisticated tricks… just three regular guys creating plots destined to fail. The producers really rely on the comedy to make these films work…

Rating: As a franchise, I’m giving Horrible Bosses a C+. But for the one scene in the second movie, it was a story we’ve seen before. Slapstick – check. Bumbling idiots – check. Best laid plans gone bad – CHECK! This is a good franchise for a day when you need to see something funny… anything funny.

I say see it if you’re having a bad day and need a laugh. AND don’t forget to email me if you have a good boss… I’m still looking…
