Review

Self explanatory. It’s now over a decade later and The Best Man cast is back together. For those of you who didn’t see the original movie, this is the story of a group of college friends who survived a tell-all book written by one of the crew. Now, they have a new reason to get together…

Story: Without giving anything away, there is a significant reason why they are all together again. Independent of that reason, the writing is pretty good. It really just plays on many of the themes of the black experience and does it in the most tasteful way. There are moments that are a little raunchy, but, who’s real life isn’t?

Performances: It’s an ensemble cast and there is no stand-out. Having said that, as an ensemble cast, they are above average. As I said with the original movie, every man can find himself in one of these characters. I think the same can be said for the women.

Visual: Rich people. They all have money and success and several of them have fame. But, the film represents all of the trappings of the previous. The football player lives in a mansion; The author has an agent and book deal issues and his wife is a chef. And one of them is a “Real Housewife”. This movie most definitely looks the part…

Rating: B. I loved the original movie because I really think this franchise is authentic. This extension of the original for the purposes of holiday cheer is a nice, next chapter in these friend’s lives. AND, it is obvious that this franchise is going to continue. No spoiler alert needed – the details of which will still be a bit of a surprise when you see this movie. Get it on DVD or streaming when you want to feel the holiday spirit…
