BREXIT

So, the United Kingdom has decided they do not want to be a part of the European Union. They want to be their own sovereignty. Is anyone shocked by this? We’re talking about a nation that still has a royal family that is relevant…

For centuries, the British Empire had been convinced that their rule should be omnipresent. Wars have been waged over whether the British should be in charge or not. So it should come as no surprise that there are still Brits who live by the history of the empire.

Did you know that until 1997, Hong Kong was still under British rule? There was a handover in 1997 where the British government gave it back to China.

Let me clarify some points as well… They aren’t leaving Europe, they’re choosing to have their economy and government independent from other European countries. And the Queen is not in charge of the government, she’s just a figure head… with a lot of money…

Each country under British jurisdiction has independent governments and political leaders. They all have the choice to separate by ballot if they so choose. Like Scotland did just a few years ago… and Australia put to a vote in 1999. Both times, the voters chose to keep the Queen as their symbolic leader.

P. S. This also means they continue to get financial support as territories of the United Kingdom…

But here’s the divide… The people who were for BREXIT are likely the people who cling to the history of the British Empire. These are likely voters who have a sense of arrogance about the strength of the United Kingdom.

The people who were against BREXIT have appeared to be more modern thinkers and more pragmatic about the realities of today’s world.

I saw an interesting quote in the midst of the BREXIT vote. David Miliband, a former member of Parliament said on Meet The Press, “Populism is popular until it has to make decisions.” And that is basically what happened.

The voters were gung-ho to be independent, then when it happened, they panicked. Now they have to make it work and they realize, they may not have considered all of the facts and consequences. But they have to make it work…

It would appear that Great Britain has given all of their other subjects food for thought. The irony is that, each of their largest territories previously voted to continue as one nation and the mother nation voted to be independent. I don’t know – does that seem hypocritical? You tell me…

Prediction: Over the next 10 years, Canada, Ireland, Scotland and Australia will reconsider their independence from the United Kingdom. It’s likely their support may become less secure as Great Britain works through their new found independence and potentially realize that there’s nothing modern about having a King or Queen. Great for nostalgia, but, practically???

Again, you tell me…
