The People’s Choice Awards

I think I have an affinity for awards shows because I grew up in a time when there were only 3 channels to watch plus PBS, so, whatever was on the TV was what you watched. Thus award shows and soap operas. I’m gonna talk about award shows right now – The People’s Choice Awards to be specific.

I get the point of this show – THE PEOPLE actually get to decide who wins, not some academy or some board or association. Great. But, the quality of the show has truly gone down hill. Not that it was ever an A list show to begin with, but…

It’s almost become akin to the MTV Awards or the Teen Choice Awards. Both of those shows shoot for informality. Being unique and quirky seems to be compulsory. I miss the formality.

To be specific, I’ll start with the host. It was one of the girls from The Big Bang Theory – Kaley Cuoco. She was horrible. She should not do that again. AND, the joke about Neil Patrick Harris being bent out of shape because he’s not the host of EVERY awards show is old. Let’s all move on…

And the performances were not much better. Maroon 5 was good – I think everyone likes the song, “Move’s Like Jagger.” But, Demi Lovato was abominable. A Capella singing is not her forte – she should stick to studio recording until she develops a better live performance. But, this kinda makes sense with the whole notion that this show has become for the young. Demi Lovato is 19. Hopefully as she gets older, her voice and ability to perform will get better.

And the awards – surprised at a few. Nathan Fillion won for Castle. Didn’t know young people liked Castle. It seems like an old person’s show. It’s not a reality show and it has great substance, which, is never what’s popular. Surprising, but, well deserved as far as I’m concerned.

And this Bridesmaids craze. Bridesmaids sucked. Not surprised at this win. This fits with the quality of this show. I’m convinced this whole Bridesmaids thing is just bandwagon. It was supposed to be funny; It was empowering for women and Melissa McCarthy was in it and she is the flavor of the month. I’m only co-signing the Melissa McCarthy part because she is actually funny in the movie. Barring a few other funny moments, its a great big no for me.

But, most of all, Katy Perry won the most awards – 5. The youth love Katie Perry – another indication of who’s running this show. But, she was criticized for not showing up. She had just announced her split from Russell Brand days earlier. Give the girl a break. Critics tend to be old…

So, overall, the show gets a D. And every year it seems to get worse. Not what I think Dick Clark intended when he started it 38 years ago, but, it’s an indication of where we are now in TV land. Quality or Quantity?

The people have spoken…
